Wine Country Weekend

Healdsburg, CA

A couple weeks ago, my husband Nick and I spent a weekend in Healdsburg, one of northern California’s famous grape-growing regions. The last time we were here, Nick did an Ironman race, which means he swam, biked, and ran past 140-something miles of vineyards while sipping nothing but Gatorade and weird goo. It was pretty much the opposite of wine tasting. So, we came back to do it right this time. Here’s a look at some of our favorite spots, which came recommended by fellow food-and-wine-loving friends.

Truett Hurst, Healdsburg, CA

We loved the vino and the vibe (picture creekside picnicking, sheep, and even more blooms) at Truett Hurst so much that we joined their wine club.

Quivira, Healdsburg, CA

Biodynamic farming at Quivira, Healdsburg, CA

We learned a bit about biodynamic farming—and how it enhances the flavor of the wine—at Quivira. I’d love to come back for one of their farm-to-table dinners.

Barndiva, Healdsburg, CA

Barndiva cocktail, Healdsburg, CA

With this kind of bar setup at Barndiva, cocktails were a must. June in July, a mix of strawberries, house-made horchata, and rum infused with vanilla beans, was delicious, as was the food.

Here’s a snap from the passenger’s seat. I remember running by this, said Nick after every other vineyard. You will never hear me speak such words.

Bella Vineyards & Wine Caves, Healdsburg, CA

Hula hoops at Bella Vineyards & Wine Caves, Healdsburg, CA
Bella was a cute spot with wine caves, live music, and hula hooping, which is even more fun with rosé.

Russian River Brewing Company

But we didn’t come just for the grapes. We also stopped at Russian River Brewing Company to stock up on Nick’s favorite beer, the award-winning Pliny the Elder.

If you have any favorite wine-tasting spots in California and beyond (have passport, will travel), please spill them in the comments.

  1. Wow, who knew you were so incredible a hula hooping? That's got to make for a wonderful ice-breaker! "One thing you didn't know about me is that when I drink biodynamic wine, I immediately become the world's most adorable adult hula hooper!" Boom, now you have something to tell all your new friends at the new gig! Xoxox BA

    1. Yes, hula hooping is my secret talent! That will definitely be my new go-to ice breaker. xo!

  2. OOh, what a fun trip! Ethan and I took a lovely vacay once in Yountville where we tried out all the restaurants (not French Laundry b/c we aren't gazillionaires). We also went to Healdsburg and stayed at the house of a high school friend of Ethan's who is a really successful winemaker! THAT was super cool.

    1. That sounds like so much fun! Does that mean you and Ethan get free wine? If so, I'm coming over :) I'm totally with you on French Laundry. It's on my bucket list, but uh, so is a trip to actual France so, you know, priorities.

  3. That looks like such a great and relaxing trip! I've always wanted to go to Napa Valley for wine tasting. Someday : ) Love all the bright photos you captured of your trip. That strawberry horchata drink sounds and looks delicious. I'm also loving what you wore! The sun hat is so cute and you look so comfortable and cute! Just started following on BL! Hope you can follow back so we can stay connected : )

    1. Hi Anna! Thank you for the sweet comments. You should definitely try to make it out to Healdsburg and Napa one day! I love seeing your posts out and about in Seattle. Now following on BL, too :) xo
